Maryland swept a doubleheader from Manhattan Saturday afternoon, winning 4-1 and 10-1, and is off to its third-best start since 1924 with an 8-1 record. The pitching staff was again at the forefront, with four Terps combining to allow just one earned run in the two games combined. David Carroll (2-0) pitched a complete-game two-hitter in game one, while Sander Beck (1-0), Charlie Haslup and Will Bouey held Manhattan (1-6) to just one run in game two.
Only twice since 1924 have the Terps had a better start than this season: in 1967 they opened 12-1 and in 1968 they were 10-1.
Through nine games, Maryland has now held its opponents to a run or less on seven occasions. Manhattan came into the series hitting .331 as a team, but has gone just 11-for-78 (.141) in three games against the Terrapins.
