Terrapoin Wrestling Squad Rallies for Win Over Nebraska at the Garden

– Carl Buchholz won a dramatic decision in overtime to propel the No. 18 Maryland wrestling team (6-3) to a come-from-behind victory over No. 14 Nebraska Sunday in the second match of the Grapple at the Garden at Madison Square Garden.

With the Terps trailing by two points and needing a win, Buchholz (285) recovered after giving up a first-period reversal to the Cornhuskers’ Donny Longendyke to send the match into sudden victory. After shots by both wrestlers failed to yield any points in the period, Buchholz rode Longendyke for the entire 30 seconds in the first half of the tiebreaker.

Holding the upper hand, Buchholz freed himself midway through the second half of the first tiebreaker and held off Longendyke for the win and an 18-17 Terrapin victory.

After the Cornhuskers earned a major decision at 165 and a fall at 174, the Terps trailed 17-9 and needed to win the final three matches.

Jimmy Sheptock started the comeback with a 3-2 sudden victory over sixth-ranked Josh Ihnen. Ihnen scored an early takedown in the first period. Sheptock, who is ranked 10th nationally, responded with two second-period takedowns to tie the match at four.

Following a scoreless third period, Sheptock completed a shot on Ihnen’s legs at the edge of the mat, lifted the All-American, and threw Ihnen down to end the match mere seconds before the period expired. Sheptock is now 6-1 this season against nationally-ranked wrestlers.
