The Earl of Baltimore Has Died at Age 82

It’s a sad for Oriole Nation . Believe me after my excursion to FanFest today –Oriole Nation is alive and strong as thousands turned out for the event. Buck Showalter spoke passionately about how much Earl was respected in baseball circles. He regaled about how happy Earl was about the resurgence of Oriole baseball last year.

So much has been written about Earl today, but I will add what I loved about him.

Earl was the master of the house. It was his way or the highway and his way was the winning way. Many of the players might not have loved him but they all respected his word.

Earl despised the bunt, I despise the bunt. 3 run homers were what fueled him and the orioles.

He handling of his starting pitchers and his his bullpen was a masterpiece.

His greatest achievement in my eyes was averaging 106 victories in 69, 70, and 71. He would complain after a loss that it was tough to stay 50 games over 500.

His battles with Cakes were legendary but certainly Palmer was none the worst for them.

Earl will be missed sorely by every Oriole fan but his legend will live on forever.

there were a couple of years i thought earl should have won mvp despite the fact he was the manager. i’ll never forget a game vs cleve where it appeared the tribe won the game and both teams left teh field and dugouts. earl argued with the umps about the last play. the players returned to the field and the o’s eventually won the game. if you go to you tube there are some great videos of earl and the umps going at it.
