The No. 1 Maryland women’s lacrosse team clinched at least a share of the ACC regular season title with a 14-13 victory against No. 2 North Carolina Saturday.
The Terps (14-0, 4-0 ACC) were led by senior Katie Schwarzmann and freshman Taylor Cummings, who recorded five and four goals, respectively. Brooke Griffin added three assists as Maryland set a new attendance record for a lacrosse game at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex with a crowd of 2,347.
The 1v2 battle lived up to all the hype as the teams headed into the half knotted at eight apiece with six lead changes and seven ties in the first period alone. North Carolina (11-2, 4-1 ACC) held a stark 11-6 draw control advantage in the first stanza and also outshot the Terps 19-12. The Tar Heels also held possession a large majority of the period.
My take: Kasey Howard (Maryland’s goalie) was the difference today. Let’s be real Maryland remains #1 but Carolina just isn’t that far away
