Regarding the lacrosse draw, this is the quarterfinals so one wouldn’t expect to face an easy opponent. On the men’s side, I think the argument is that, given the way they finished the season, Syracuse was likely under seeded at the eighth spot and that Marquette, for example was over seeded as a sixth seed resulting in a premature Maryland-Syracuse match-up.
On the women’s side, UMass has an impressive 20-1 record and they are the traditional power in the A-10 conference with eight straight conference titles. They are impressively balanced on offense (14.19 gpg) where they have seven players who have between 33 and 42 goals. They also look to be quite strong on defense where they concede just 6.57 goals per game – like their offense good for third best in the NCAA.
Like some recent UNC teams, play two goalies – Sam Walters starts and Aileen Kelly will play the second half. Interestingly, Kelly is statistically better than Walters.
Now, one should never take a quarterfinal opponent lightly but, with that said, for all their impressive stats and record, their schedule has been far from daunting. Their two best wins have been the one goal wins over Princeton (in OT) and Cornell both in the NCAA Tournament. (Maryland beat Cornell 17-9 and won at Princeton 15-6). Their one loss came early in the season to then #14 BC (also by one goal). Their only other game against a ranked team at the time they played was at then #20 UConn which they won easily 15-6. UConn quickly fell out of the rankings and finished the season 23rd in RPI. UMass entered the NCAAT with an RPI of 19. I doubt they have seen a team with Maryland’s skill and athleticism and while anything is possible in a single elimination setting, a win at Maryland would be an upset of massive proportions.
As a final note, it’s interesting not only that Alice Mercer joins Taylor Cummings as one of the five Tewaaraton finalists but that this season that group has two defenders. The other is Notre Dame’s Barbara Sullivan. It’s the second straight year for her. The other two are Florida’s Nicole Graziano and Kayla Treanor from Syracuse.
