McCaffrey and Fournette Opt Out of Bowl Games

Tuesday in Miami, Central Michigan played Tulsa in the Miami Bowl Game or whatever. There were thousands of empty seats. It was absurd–almost a studio game. Perhaps 2 or 3 players in the game needed to showcase their games in order to enter consideration in the NFL Draft. For them the game has some importance, I think. I agree with the importance of extra practices for the team, but why limit the extra practices to just teams who are invited to play in Bowl games.

John Calapari said earlier this year that the measure of success for his program is not winning the national title, but how many players wind up as 1st round NBA picks. Bravo for him.  One of the items of most pride for  Maryland’s bball program is how many players the coaching staff has  produced playing pro ball all over the world.

It is a player’s right right to look out for himself.

When 5-7 teams start making Bowl games, do you think there might be a few too many.

NCAA football is a multi billion dollar business. Jim Harbaugh makes north of $8 million a year. David Shaw (Stanford Coach) makes millions of dollars a year as well as former Coach of LSU, Les Miles. Alabama, Penn State, Ohio state, Tennessee, etc make millions of dollars on College Football. Johnny football created a multi million dollar empire at Texas A&M. The heart of the game, the players, made NOTHING–NADA—ZILCH. Yes, they received an education in some cases (not including many Carolina basketball players under Roy Williams)., but millions of dollars have been generated on their backs.

Christian McCaffrey and Leonard Fournette owe their universities nothing. An injury in a meaningless Bowl game could cost themselves millions and perhaps even any kind of NFL payday. Yes, when OSU plays Clemson, and Bama plays Washington, the stars will have a chance to increase their value. But remember once these kids graduate, they are on their own. I have absolutely no problem with their actions and had my son been a super football player on a non championship bound team, I would have encouraged the same action.

All that being said, I am super proud of the Terps being bowl bound in DJ’s first year and am excited for the game on Monday. But if there was a highly ranked Senior who was virtually assured of being NFL early draft pick, could you really blame them for opting out of the game?
