We’ve finally made it: the national title game of the 2018 DI Women’s Lacrosse Championship will pit the two more unlikely participants, No. 3 seed James Madison and No. 4 seed Boston College, in a battle for all the marbles at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium in Stony Brook, New York.
In Friday’s first semifinal, No. 3 James Madison defeated No. 2 North Carolina to advance to its first national title game ever. The Dukes leapt out to an 8-4 lead in the first half, powered by four goals from Haley Warden. In the second half, UNC tried to fight back, but the Dukes always had an answer. Kristen Gaudian scored a hat trick in under six minutes of second-half game time and JMU marched on to the final game of the year.
The second matchup was a tug-of-war affair between the defending champion and No. 1 seed Maryland, and No. 4 Boston College in a rematch of last year’s title game, when Maryland won 16-13. On Friday night, the Terps rolled out to an early 5-2 lead before the Eagles scored five straight goals, and from that point on no team led by more than one goal until seven minutes remained in the entire game. BC superstar Sam Apuzzo scored the last two goals of the game, breaking the 13-13 tie, including one stutter-step reverse-field move that’ll go down in history. And in the end, her two markers were enough to dethrone the defending champs.
