COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Head coach Mark Turgeon announced the addition of Philadelphia’s 2018-19 Player of the Year Hakim Hart to the class of 2019 Friday.

“Hakim is a very skilled and unselfish basketball player with tremendous scoring ability who will have a great impact on our program,” Turgeon said. “He was the leading scorer on an exceptional Roman Catholic team and I was impressed by his continuous improvement throughout a spectacular season. Hakim is an outstanding teammate who comes from a great family and we are excited to welcome him to College Park.”

“I want to thank Coach Turgeon and the entire Maryland staff for recruiting me and believing in me,” Hart said. “I am appreciative of the University of Maryland for allowing me the opportunity to play basketball at the highest level in one of the best conferences in the country. I’m looking forward to getting on campus and joining my new teammates.”

Hart bolsters a talented incoming class for the Terrapins, which also returns a freshman class who accounted for 51-percent of the team’s minutes and 47-percent of its points in 2018-19. Included in the team’s returning core is Big Ten All-Freshman team honoree Jalen Smith,  who posted six double-doubles on the season.

He believes in the coaching staff, loves the players and is excited about the team’s playing schemes. Hakim is a leader on and off the court. Maryland fans will see a kid who plays with a lot of energy and passion with a high basketball IQ who can do a little bit of everything on the court.”

Matt Griffin, Head Coach of Roman Catholic: “”Hakim is a wonderful young man. He is a leader, a winner and one of the all-time greats at Roman. I am so proud of this young man and excited for his future in College Park.”

Howard Hudson, Head Coach of Philly Pride (AAU): “Hakim is an exceptional basketball player who can hurt opponents in a multitude of ways. He can knock down 3’s from the outside, he handles the ball extremely well and he has great ability in the post. He’s also really well-respected in the locker room amongst his teammates.”
Allen Rubin, Associate Editor for HoopScoopOnline.com(Philly Region): “Hakim has the whole package and is a great get for the University of Maryland. He is probably one of the most improved players in the Philly area. He was always known as a good shooter, but he also worked hard on the rest of the game. His ball handling has improved tremendously. He can also get to the rim and the foul line. He can probably defend two or three positions. I think he’s a player who could earn minutes and surprise people as a freshman. He comes from a basketball family and he’s a great kid and student.”
