YoungTerps: Maryland cruises by Michigan State 31-9 in Big Ten opener

Maryland shut up the fast start critics on both sides of the ball, opening with. an interception that led to a touchdown on the first series for the offense. In fact, Maryland used three touchdowns on consecutive drives to build a comfortable lead against the Spartans, but what happened in the second half? What is the next level for Maryland’s offense? Can the Terps find more consistency on the ground with Roman Hemby finishing with just 12 yards on the ground? Plus, what to make of the defense after generating five turnovers, including three turnovers, to shut down the Spartans especially in the redzone.

“Really proud of this team, man. Proud of the way they responded to the coaching. We’ve talked a lot the last couple of weeks about starting fast and we were able to do that today,” head coach Mike Locksley said following the win. “Any time you’re able to win on the road in the Big Ten, that’s huge and so for us to be able to come up here and do something I think that hasn’t been done since 1950, which is to win here in this stadium, definitely proud of the team,” Mike Locksley said following the win. “Happy to be 4-0. We talked all week long and for the last couple of weeks about getting off to a fast start and that’s what we’re able to do. Defense came up big early on with the turnovers. We were able to convert those to scores. Any time you come up with turnovers like we did today, it really helps you on the offensive side of the ball.”

Maryland returns to SECU Stadium next week to host Indiana as we take an early look at what to watch for.
