Maryland men’s lacrosse rising sophomore Charlie Raffa scored two goals in the U.S. under-19 men’s national team’s 24-6 win over Australia Friday in its opening game of the Federation of International Lacrosse U19 World Championship in Finland.
Matt Kavanagh led Team USA with three goals and three assists, tallying five points in the first half, as the U.S. (1-0) improved to 37-0 all-time in sanctioned U19 international competition.

Maryland senior tight end Matt Furstenburg has been named to the preseason watch list for the John Mackey Award, the Nassau County Sports Commission announced Tuesday.
Given annually to the top collegiate tight end in the nation, the award will be presented on Dec. 6, 2012 at the Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show. University of Maryland director of athletics Kevin Anderson will become president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) for 2012-13, the association announced Tuesday. Anderson was elected to the post in conjunction with the 47th Annual NACDA Convention, which was held June 22-28 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas. Anderson replaces UCLA director of athletics Dan Guerrero, who served as President in 2011-12.
