The top-ranked Maryland field hockey team won its 15th straight season opener Friday, as it beat No. 19 Boston University, 3-1, in Temple University’s Conference Cup tournament. Senior captain Jemma Buckley (Perth, Australia/John XXIII College) led the Terps (1-0) with all three of Maryland’s goals and her third career hat trick.

After a slow start, the No. 4 Maryland men’s soccer team erupted for three second half goals to defeat St. John’s, 3-0, in the season opener at the ACC/BIG EAST Challenge at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

The heavyweight showdown between the No. 4 University of Maryland women’s soccer team and No. 1 Stanford ended in a 0-0 tie Friday night at Ludwig Field.

“Tonight was a tale of two halves,” said Maryland head coach Brian Pensky. “Stanford is a terrific team and a terrific program and I think we were a little passive at the start. Gradually, through the first half and into the second we started to realize we could play with them.”

Miami has declared a number of its football players ineligible until they are reinstated by the NCAA, a source close to the team confirmed to ESPN.com’s Heather Dinich. The source said Miami declared up to 13 players under investigation by the NCAA ineligible to allow the NCAA to make a ruling by the season opener.
