The last quarterfinal game in the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament Sunday afternoon between the top seeded and home standing Maryland Terrapins and the eighth seeded Northwestern Wildcats came with two guarantees. First, it guaranteed one Final Four spot for what would become the lone Big Ten team remaining. Second, it assured that, for the first time in seven seasons, either Northwestern or Maryland would not make a championship weekend appearance.

After a close first half in which they managed to … Read More »

If you are a Maryland Terrapins baseball fan, the document below is of real importance to you. The Big Ten released the bracket for the 2015 conference Tournament and Maryland is the number four seed. Interestingly, the first team the Terps will play. the Michigan State Spartans, is one of the conference foes Maryland didn’t meet in the regular season’s unbalanced schedule. The Spartans are the fifth seed.

Last season at this time, the Terrapins were on a roll. Maryland … Read More »

Todd Carton breaks down the news.

Bullis High School quarterback Dwayne Haskins, Jr. capped off one of the great weeks in recent Maryland recruiting Friday afternoon at approximately 3:10 when he announced his commitment to the University of Maryland on a Spreecast streamed live by ESPN. The week started with the commitment of Duke transfer Rasheed Sulaimon that sparked talk of Maryland garnering a number one preseason ranking in the fall.

For several months, people who follow football recruiting closely … Read More »

A little perspective

It’s a bit disconcerting to see the Maryland Terrapins and Northwestern Wildcats women’s lacrosse teams preparing to meet in an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal game. Why? Look back to 1995. Over the past 20 years, the two programs share 16 national championships (nine for the Terps and seven for the Wildcats). True, the teams have only four NCAA Tournament meetings over that span but all four have come either in the championship game or in the semifinals with … Read More »

Periodically throughout the spring, I have received news releases announcing that a pair of athletes from one of the Big Ten member institutions had received something called the Big Ten Medal of Honor. Because I write for blogs covering the University of Maryland, I ignored all the releases about the student athletes from Nebraska, Purdue, Iowa and so on. Yesterday, my inbox dinged with the relevant news. The winners of the Big Ten Medal of Honor for Maryland are Malina … Read More »

When Maryland announced its move to the Big Ten a howl arose from significant segments of the fan base. Some of the loudest caterwauling came from lacrosse fans and understandably so. The Terps planned to leave the strongest lacrosse conference in the NCAA for one that would be in its first season. Terps fans felt some combination of relief (and perhaps a touch of horror) when the B1G announced it had a new affiliate member for lacrosse only none other … Read More »

More has made of the final shot by Yale that might have crossed the line for a tieing goal then was made of the missed out of bounds deflection by Duke that cost Wisconsin the title. There is very little outcry about the possession call mistake by the refs in the same game.

Why is this happening? Pure and simple–anti Maryland bias.

Tough night for the DC faithful. Up 3-1 in the quarterfinal series the Caps lost a succession of 3 one goal games to the Rangers. Once again Ovie fails to make a Conference final.

John Wall returned to the Wizards lineups and played valiantly if not spectacularly. Cut to the chase, Paul Pierce hit a 3 point shot with 8 seconds left to give the Wiz an 81-80 lead.  Al Horford fought for a loose ball after a John Wall … Read More »
