 In a battle of two perennial college soccer powers, the No. 6 Maryland men’s soccer team drew with No. 11 UCLA 2-2 on an energy-fueled Friday night at Ludwig Field.

Senior midfielder John Stertzer has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week for his role in Maryland’s 3-0 shutout of No. 7 Louisville, the league office announced Tuesday.

The MAC Hermann Trophy candidate gave Maryland a three-goal cushion with his goal late in the second half. The No. 9 Maryland men’s soccer team rallied to tie Penn State 2-2 in the last exhibition game of the preseason Monday at a rain-soaked Ludwig Field.

Penn State tallied the only goal of the first half in the 20th minute. Nittany Lion forward Julian Cardona scored off a cross from Daniel Burnham from across the box. The Nittany Lions increased their lead to two in the 64th minute off a Mikey Minutillo goal off a cross.

Maryland senior Casey Townsend and junior John Stertzer garnered NSCAA Division I Men’s Soccer All-America honors Friday.

Townsend,a forward from Traverse City, Mich., was named a second-team selection. The MAC MAC Hermann Trophy recorded first team All-ACC honors for the second straight year as one of the nation’s top goal-scorers in 2011. The captain racked up 17 goals for the Terps.
