Members of the search committee and the executive-search firm for the head football coach position were announced Wednesday by the athletics department. The university has hired DHR International to aid in the search. Pat Richter, former athletic director at the University of Wisconsin, is DHR’s lead consultant on the search. Senior associate A.D. and chief financial officer Randy Eaton was named the chairman of the search committee.

Mike Leach—clearly the most popular choice among the fans at this point. His ability to put points on the board and being able to coach his QBs way up catches your eye immediately. His success in the Big 12 speaks for itself. I do believe his hire would put the fans into the seats at Byrd. Early in the year I was talking with my good friend Marc Appel who was extremely impressed with Danny O’Brien, Marc said to me that with a healthy O”Brien –Maryland would be in every game and win more then their share. Never has a prediction rung more true. The 2 pivotal games for the Terps were UVA and NC State–both winners based largely on the great play of QB1. Shortly after Ralph was hired there was the annual Terrapin club event at Artie Donovan’s Country Club in Baltimore. I had a chance to sit down with Ralph with 6 or 7 Terrapin members. According to Leach, Kevin Anderson, Leach’s agent there has been no interaction as of now. This should change very quickly.
THe university has sold its 10,000 allotment of seats to the Military Bowl. Ralph will be coaching his last game for the Terps and this will be an interesting game.
This is not the way anyone wanted Ralph’s career to end at College Park. But the choice came down to a lame duck year, a new 4 or 5 year contract or 100% buyout of his remaining year. Ralph will receive $2 Million dollars for not coaching next year.
