Coming off of its seventh NCAA title in program history, the Maryland field hockey team announced today the addition of three incoming freshmen to the squad. The class of 2015 will assist the Terps in carrying on their tradition of success.  This year’s class includes three members of the U.S. National team pipeline system – Maxine Fluharty (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Technical), Katie Gerzabek (Springfield, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame), and Kasey Tapman (Pocomoke City, Md./Pocomoke).

Running back Justus Pickett signed a national letter of intent Monday and will join the Terps in the fall. His signing increases the 2011 class to 21 student-athletes. A native of Charlotte, N.C., Pickett rushed for 2,429 yards and 31 touchdowns last season. That was the third-most yards ever in one season by a Mecklenburg County back and the TD total was ninth. Maryland head football coach Randy Edsall announced Monday that Andre Powell has joined the staff as running backs coach. Powell spent the last four seasons at Clemson where he coached running backs and coordinated the special teams his final three years. He tutored All-Atlantic Coast Conference running backs James Davis and C.J. Spiller, two of the top three rushers in Clemson history. Spiller finished his career No. 2 in NCAA FBS history in all-purpose running.

Madieu Williams, a Minnesota Vikings safety who played at the University of Maryland, was named the winner of the Walter Payton Award before kickoff of Super Bowl XLV.  Williams, who was born in Sierra Leone, also attended DuVal High School in Lanham, Md., and Towson University.

Lots of my readers wanted the Steelers to lose in the worst way. I am happy they lost. It takes a little of the sting out of the Ravens disastrous 2 losses to Pittsburgh. It was great to see the defensive player of the year, #43, get beat by Jennings. It was fun to watch the Mike Tomlin interview. I am waiting for the Hines Ward interview. The Steelers were unable to attack a totally depleted Packer secondary.

Lynetta Kizer had 22 points and 13 rebounds, and No. 12 Maryland used a strong second half to defeat North Carolina State 88-59 on Sunday.  The Terrapins (20-3, 6-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) trailed by 12 with just over 13 minutes elapsed and 39-36 at halftime before storming back to extend their winning streak to seven. The victory gave Maryland its seventh consecutive 20-win season under coach Brenda Frese.
