The Terps defeated Alabama 9-5 on Saturday. The Terrapins (1-2) found their offense after scoring once in the series opener. Junior Nick Cieri went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and the first home run of Maryland’s six-run fourth. Senior Anthony Papio and junior Madison Nickens notched the other two big flies in the frame. Seniors Bryan Cole and Greg Danseglio have been named Big Ten Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, as announced by the Big Ten Conference Tuesday.

The pair of seniors were instrumental in the Terps’ season-opening 15-10 victory against High Point which included 11 second half goals.

I thought I was watching a typical slow start from the basketball team as the Terps were just outplayed in the 1st half by an 0-2 squad. The goalie from St Mary’s, Tim Troutner was stellar in the 1st half for HPU allowing just 4 goals and saving 10. The penultimate weekend in February is an unusually busy one for Maryland athletics with Terps softball, baseball, gymnastics, men’s and women’s lacrosse, wrestling, tennis, golf and men’s and women’s basketball all seeing action. Unfortunately for Terrapins’ fans, the weekend started with a goose egg when softball dropped a pair of one run decisions to Alabama and Georgia State, baseball lost its season opener at Alabama’s new stadium and gymnastics lost at home to eleventh ranked Arkansas.
