The top-ranked Maryland field hockey team was named the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament Tuesday night. The undefeated Terrapins, who are returning national champions, will begin their road to defending their title at home Saturday at 11 a.m. against the 16-seed American. The Tar Heels shut out the Ladt terps tonight 3-0 thus ending the Terrapins’ regular season at 12-5-2. Maryland will now have to wait to find out if it’s selected to the 2009 NCAA tournament. The Terps were 20th in the final regular season RPI and look to be on solid ground to make their first tournament appearance since 2004. The No. 8 University of Maryland women’s soccer team’s home unbeaten streak of nine matches, dating back to last season, came to an end Thursday night at Ludwig Field with a 3-1 loss to No. 11 Wake Forest.
